Common Causes of High Usage & Water Saving Resources

what is an average family's water usage?

Historically, we have found that the typical four person family (two adults, two children) uses approximately 95,000 gallons per year on average. However, it is hard to determine an exact average due to the differences in individual needs. We have found that customers with irrigation or watering systems can use an additional 80,000-200,000 gallons during the summer months!

Did you know?

The average irrigation system sprinkler head can uses between 12-16 gallons per minute, some sprinkler heads can even use up to 30 gallons per minute!

Many irrigation users have between 80,000 to 200,000 gallons of usage per watering season, that number can be even higher with leaks or inefficient watering!

Even a slowly leaking toilet flapper could waste 200 gallons of water every day.

To check for a leaking flapper drop food coloring or indicator tablets in the tank, do not flush, and wait 15 minutes. If the color appears in the bowl this indicates that the toilet is running or leaking. Leak indicator tablet kits are available for pick-up at the Water Works office.
